Attachment 1 fuleview Series The Gateview series consists of deep, well-drained soils mr terraces, alluvial fans, and till pains. Slopes are 2 to 30 percent. These soils formed in gravelly and cobbh• alluvium and g:acial till of mixed origin. In a representative profile the surface layer is dark grayish-brown and grayish-brown cobbly loam and very gravelly' sandy loam about °_2 inches thick. The under- lying material is brown very gravelly sandy loam. It extents to a depth of 60 inches or more. Gatevie«• soils are at elevations of 8,500 to 9,500 feet. The average annual soil temperature is 10° F., and the average annual precipitation is about ^_0 inches. The native vegetation is commonly Thurber fescue, native bluegrass.and big sagebrush. Permeability is moderate. Roots can penetrate to a depth of more than GO inches, but available water C:1paCtty 15 IOW. The Gateview soils in the survey area are near Crested Butte. They are used mainly for range. Some areas are irrigated. Representat,•:e profile of Gateview cobbly loam, 8 to 30 percent slopes, in a road cut about 2 miles south of Crested Butte; sec. 12, T. 14 S., R. 8G'rV., Gunnison County: All-0 to 30 inches, dark grayish-bron•n (lOYR 4/2) cobbly loam, very dark brown (IOYR 2/2) moist; mod- erate, medium, granular structure Darting to mod- erate, fine, granular; slightly hard, very friable; about 25 percent cobblestones and Rravel; pH 6.8; clear, smooth boundary. A12-10 to 22 inches, grayish-brown (lOYR 5/2) very gravelly sandy loam, very dark brown (lOYR 2/2) moist; weak, very fine, granular structure; soft, very friable; 60 percent gravel and cobblestones; pFI 6.8; gradual, smooth boundary. (:-22 to 60 inches, brawn (lOYR 5/3) very gravelly sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; slightly hard, eery friable; GO percent gravel and cobLlc- stonas; pH 7.0. The All horizon is typically cobbly loam, but in places is cobbly sandt• loam. The A horizon ranges from 1G to 25 inches in thickness. The content aC gravel and cobblestones below a depth of about 30 inches is a5 to 70 percent. Gateview cobbly loam, 2 to S percent slopes (Ge8).- This soil is maim} in the Crested Butte :u ea nn outwash fans. It has the profile descrihcrh ss reptr,, utaticc of the series. In irrigated arc:u it has :.1: ureanic mat 1 to 2 inches thick at the sw'face. Include(1 tcith this soil in mapping are small :u~eas of Fola and Curecanti soils and small :ucas of Yalman soils along margins of the uplands. Included soils make up about 10 percent of the total acreage. Dlost of the acreage is irrigated and is used tm ha}: and pasture. The rest is used for range. Runoff IS SI0''.. Erosiml is a moderate hazard during perioris of snu«- melt, but is not a hazard in areas muter irrigated pas- ture toter. Gateview cobbh' loam, S to 30 percent slopes (GeEI.- This soil is mainly in the Crested rutte :u'ca on glacial moraines and outwash fans. It has a profile similar to the one described as representative of the series, but in small eroded areas the surface lacer is slightly lighter colored and thinner. Included with this soil in mapping are areas that are up to 10 percent Youman and Passa]• soils and small areas of Curecanti and Fola soils aioug sh•eams and terraces. A'early all the acreage is native range and is used for grazing. Some small areas are used for irrigated meadow hay and pasture. Runoff is medium, and the erasion hazard is moderate.
