. Table 3-5. Seed Mixes Applied on Areas
Revegetat ed in 1985
Two seed mixes were applietl on reclaimed areas in 1985. Seed mix 1 was used on upland
drier sites and south facing exposures. Seed mix 2 was used in drainages or north facing
exposures. Up to 25 percent of the reclaimed areas were seeded with seed mix 2, while
the majority of the area was seeded with seed mix 1.
A new drill seeder based on the Laird rangeland drill was manufactured for Peabody in
1985. The drill was constructed with two seed boxes, one for large seed and one for
small seed. This allowed the drilling of the large seed and broadcasting of the smaller
seed. Seed mixes sere thus split into large seed and small seetl components antl banged
seperately by the seed dealer. All seetlinq rates are presented as drilled rates.
Seed hlix 1 - La rqe Seed Component
5 ep rtes Drilled Rate
Scientific Name Common tJame PLS 165/Ac
Aqropyron dasv stachyum v. dasystachyum Th irks pike Wheatgrass 2.00
Aqropyron intermedium Intermediate 4lheatgrass 1,00
Aqropyron dasvstachyum v, ri parium Streambank Wheatgrass 1.00
Aqropyron smithii 4lestern Wheatgrass 2.00
• Aoropyron inerme Beardless Bl uebu nrh VVheatgra ss 2.00
Aoropyron trachycaulum Slender Wheatgrass 2.00
Ceratochloa marginate Mountain Brame 2.D0
Dac tylis glomerate Orchardgrass 0.50
Elymus cinereus Basin Wildrye 1.00
Elymus 'un~ teus Russian Wildrye 1.00
Fest uca ovine v. ov ina Sheep Fesr ue 0.50
Stipa viridula Green fJeedlegrass 2.00
Cerr ocarpus ledifloi us Curlleaf Mountain Flahogany 0.10
Purshia tridentate Antelope Bitterbrush 0.20
Atri plex canesrens Fourwi ng Sal tbush 0.13
Ceratoides Janata Wi nterf at 0.07
Rhus trilobata Sk unkbu sh Sumac 0.08
Medysarum boreale Utah S,veetvetch 0.05
P enstemon st rictus Rocky Mountain Penstemon 0.05
Linum lewisii Lewis Flax 0.05
Total La rqe Seetl 17.73 PLS lbs/Ac
Seed Mix 1 - Small See d Component
Phleum pracense timothy 0.10
Pga ample Liig Ul ucgras5 0.50
Poa rompressa Canada Ul ucgras5 0.10
Astragalus ricer Lirgr Milkve [t'h I.DO
• Fled is ago sett va
11e1 ilotu5 off icinalis AIfa11a
Yellow Twee [clgvrr 0.50
O,SG
Achillea lanulosa 'Nest crn r,,rrnw 0.05
1-5
