• Savage and Savage
Memorandum
•

To: Donald W. MacDonald, Coors Energy Company
From: Michael Savage, Savage and Savage, Inc.
Date: December 5, 2003
Subject: Fourth Quarter 2003 Pest and Disease Inspection; Keenesbutg Mine
File #: C-81-028
On December 4, 2003 I conducted an inspection of the reclaimed and revegetated areas at
the Keenesburg Mine for evidence of plain pests or diseases that could affect the re-
established vegetation atthe Keenesburg Mine.
All reclaimed and revegetated areas of the mine, including the 1985, 1986, 1987, 1995,
1998 interscedmgs, 1999, 2000, and 2002 seedings were inspected by pedestrian and
vehicle means. The dugout area, the small cottonwood grove, and the B Pit areas were
also inspected for any potential weedy invasive species. I did not identify any disease
conditions at any of the reclaimed and revegetated areas or within the mine site. Nor did I
identify any plant pests which had affected the growth of the vegetation during the past
growing season. No areas which experienced a~ infestation or blight were found during
fire inspection.
tamarisk eradication.
Weed control activities at the mine this year have taken three forms. A controlled bum
was conducted within a portion of Area 10 to reduce an area of cheatgrass prevalence.
Subsequent late season growth reveals growth by warm season perennial grasses.
Mowing activities took place in Area 8 in the spring of 2003 and in November 2003 in
Areas 1, 3, 11,12, and 13. The mowing effectively reduced standing biomass and thatch
buildup, in addition to reducing yucca and sand sage clumps. A small chmtp of tamarisk
within the bottom of the B Pit was physically excavated and removed to prevem seed
spread and regrowth in accordance with Governor Owens Executive Order reeardine
C: Keenesburg Pest and Disease Inspection File
Danny Kipp, Keenesburg Mine
AHR-2003
-48-
