Eight additional species contributed significantly to <br />. cover this year; Oryzopsis hymerwtdes accounted for 3.60 percent mean cover and 9.06 <br />percent relative cover, Kochia scoparia (kochia) contributed 3.80 percent mean and 8.68 <br />percent relative cover, Calamovilfa longifolia provided 2.00 percent mean cover and 6.04 <br />percent relative, Bromus marginatus accounted for 2.40 and 5.28 percent mean and <br />relative cover, Elymus,lunceus (Russian wildrye) cornnbuted 2.40 percent mean and 4.91 <br />percent relative cover, Poa compresses (Canada bluegrass) accounted for 2.00 percent <br />mean cover and 3.77 percent relative cover, Agropyron dasystachyum contributed 1.20 <br />percent mean and 3.02 percent relative cever, and Agropyron intermedium provided 0.60 <br />percem mean cover and 3.02 percent relative cover. <br />Vegetative fitter (prior years growth, dead wood, and other biologic organic material) <br />comprised 30.60 percent ground cover overall within the 1997 reclamation areas. Bare <br />soil comprised 25.80 percent of the ground cover. No rock or cryptogams were <br />encountered during the cover sampling in the 1997 reclamation areas. <br />3.1.3.2 Herbaceous Produetion <br />Total herbaceous production this year in the 1997 reclamation areas was the highest of <br />any area sampled at 163.05 g/m2 (1454 ]b/ac). Perennial grasses contributed significantly <br />to herbaceous production, with 131.44 g/m2 (1172 Ib/ac) or 80.6 percent of total <br />herbaceous production. Annual grasses contributed little to herbaceous production in this <br />area (6.15 g/m2 (55 lb/ac)). Armual forts accourned for the second highest contribution <br />• with 21.53 g/mz (192 lb/ac), 13.2 percem of the total mean herbaceous production. <br />Biennial forts contributed 0.20 g/m2 (2 Ib/ac) or 0.1 percent of total herbaceous <br />production. Perennial forts provided 3.73 g/m2 (33 Ib/ac) or 2.3 percent of total <br />herbaceous production. <br />3.1.3.3 Species Composition <br />Cover sampling encountered two lifi:fonns and nineteen species within the 1997 <br />reclamation areas. The lifeforms included eleven species of perennial grass, one annual <br />grass, two perennial, and five anrmal forts. Of the species enwumered on the 1997 <br />reclamation areas, twelve were native and seven were introduced. Perennal and biennial <br />species outnumbered annual species by thirteen to six. Both warm and cool season <br />species contributed to the seasonality of the 1997 reclamation areas. Cool season <br />graminoids outnumbered warm season species nine to three. Five fort species were <br />identified as cool season and two were warm season. <br />The 1997 reclamation areas had eleven species contributing greater than three percent <br />relative cover including eight perennial grasses, one annual grass, and two annual forts. <br />These species included Agropyron smrthil (23.02%), Bromus tectorum (14.34%), <br />Helianthus ammus (13.21%), Oryzopsis hyme>mides (9.06%), Kochia scoparia (8.68%), <br />Calamovilfa lorlgifolia (6.04%), Bromus margtnatus (5.28%), Elymus junceus (4.91%), <br />Poe compresses (3.77%), Agropyron dasystachyum (3.02%), and Agropyron iruermedium <br />.
