Additional Pages
1999 Annual Report
Fountain Pit
M-82-155
Centennial Materials
Anniversary Date: December 31
Overview of Permit Year: During the 1999 operating year there was a great deal of activity at this site.
This was primarily due to the very active construction market throughout the Colorado Springs area.
However, the extensive stripping done during 1998 allowed the operation to show essentially no
expansion in the amount of affected land. Mining is proceeding eastward into the stripped land. It
appears that no additional land will need to be stripped during the next year.
The installation of the washing system was completed and has added greatly to the functional
capability of the operation to produce a wider variety of products. At this time it is not known whether
this will accelerate the operation, but it appears that some increase in the rate of mining will probably
occur as more demand for washed products, in addition to unwashed products, increases.
Annual Report Maps: The enclosed maps show the primary areas of disturbance and the type of
disturbance occurring in each area. The disturbance zones shown on the map have changed somewhat in
their location and extent in comparison to previous maps. This change is the resul[ of new aerial
photography (taken on December 12, 1999) which allowed for a much more accurate portrayal of the
disturbance locations. The amount of change in location and definition is not great, but the current
maps reflect an updated portrayal of the operation zones.
Affected Lands: The amount of affected land has not increased significantly in the last year. The same
processes of operating the pit are being used as has been used in the past. The isolated stockpiles in the
revegetated land in the northeastern corner of the site were removed. This created a fresh disturbance on
the bottom of this basin, but because the land is essentially flat where the disturbance was created no
additional erosion hazard was created. This removal will allow bringing this land to completion in the
near future. The use of long supply conveyors to carry material from the mining area to the plant helps
to extend the amount of time until the plant will need to be moved. The scale was moved from the
extreme northeastern corner of the site to the location shown on the map and within the operation.
Revegetation: The site is stable and is not subject to erosion.
Expected Activity (2000): Mining will proceed eastward into the stripped land. No additional
stripping is expected to occur, but with the very active construction market there is a possibility that
additional stripping will occur prior to the end of the next permit year.
Centennial Materials 1999 Annual Report M-82-155 Fountain Pit Page 1 of 2
