Box 316
STE L`L pueblo, Colorado 81002
September 15, 1986
Ms. Patricia Martinek
Mined Land Reclamation Division
423 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Iicnver, Colorado 80203
~~~~~ ~~
~ 1$19a~
SrP q
REC~AM TION Ol~t~tptd
I:E: Annual Report ~~~(~_Q,u
Canon Dolomite Quarry 11~~'"`~~
File M-77-376
Dear IQs. Martinek:
Lr~closed is the annual report for CF&I Steel Corporation's Canon Dolomite
Quarry. CF&I has done extensive reclamation work on inactive areas of the
quarry this past year in an effort to reduce the required bonding amount.
It is hoped that if the bond amount is reduced, an active operation can be
started at the quarry. The quarry may be cperated by Fountain Sand & Gravel
Company, a subsidiary of CF&I Steel Corporation. Should this happen an
application for succession of operator will be filed with the Division.
-ihe current bond covers reclamation of future mini m3 disturbances of
approximately 20 acres a~ld active developed areas of apln~oxilrately 12 acres.
Current requirements for dolomite at the Pueblo steel mill 'nave been reduced
drastically since the original permit application and the approved Amendment
!do. 1. Because of the drastically reduced requirements, the expansior. of the
quarry anticipated in 1982 will not happen. Stockpiles of dolomite at Pueblo
have been sufficient for steel I,roduction since the cessation of operations,
al;rroximately 5 years. Continued small scale operation at the quarry will
provide adequate dolomite for the steel mill as well as supply. a small market
for decorative stone. A small active operation will benefit reclamation of the
site by E~r•oducing fines for topsoil substitution as well as allow for continued
reclamation of inactive areas.
Attached is a revised estimate of the current reclamation -cost, which will
cover an active operation of the size anticipated for some years to come.
Please submit this revised bonding estimate for approval.
1f you have any questions, please call me at 561-7150.
Sincerely,
CJ~~~ I
Joe Bla1s
Mininy Engineer
