ANNUAL REPORT
Operator: United Companies of Mesa County
Operation: Railhead Pit
File Number: M-1995-036
Anniversary Date: October 19, 2004
Railhead Pit was active during the report year mostly for processing and
stockpiling grave] products. Once a year stockpiled used concrete and asphalt
materials are crushed and stockpiled for recycled roadbase. The higher quality
used asphalt is crushed and stockpiled separately.
Last winter, in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation and Colorado
Department of Wildlife, United Companies removed part of a river dike, built in
the 80's, from the north side of the Colorado River, near the Walter Walker
Wildlife area, with the idea in mind spring runoff would flush out part of the
wildlife area. The dike material was pit run material. This material was stockpiled
in the pit for future crushing.
A small part of the pit area located on the west side of Railroad Circle had a bit of
overburden removed and used as fill on a Fruita subdivision. This pit azea was ]eft
with very flat slopes and no vertical faces.
During the year, from time to time, we do take in a small amount of fill dirt which
is stockpiled for future pit slope backfill.
Reclamation for this report period consisted of constructing another short stretch of
3:1 pit slope. This winter we may do a bit more of slope construction. Our weed
control program continues at this location on a twice a year treatment schedule.
The weeds are being controlled. We've experienced a dry yeaz -the weeds did not
get much rainwater.
