Third Party Oversight 11 Water, Waste & Land, Inc.
San Luis Mine June 9, 1994
' 4.0 RAISE I EMBANKMENT
This section discusses the material (Type 1) utilized for construction of the Phase II,
' Raise I Embankment. The main issue discussed is material gradations and specifications, and
how any changes may have affected the original design intent. Also discussed are initial and
final construction observations, and technical issues related to specification changes.
1
4.1 MATERIALS SPECIFICATIONS
1 The design intent for the Raise I Embankment is discussed in Section 2.2. The original
material specifications, contained in the design report (SRK, 1993a), were formally revised
in the Construction Status Report (SRK, 1993c1 by BMRI after the October 1, 1993 DMG
inspection. According to WWL's review of the Construction Status Report and personal
communications with field QA personnel, revisions to the original specifications were required
as gradations of available construction materials did not fall within the original (Phase II, Raise
I Embankment) specifications. The original and revised materials specifications for the
embankment material (Type 1) are shown in Tables 4.1 and 4.2. A visual comparison of the
' original and revised gradation specifications is shown on Figure 2.
1

1

TABLE 4.1
TYPE 1 MATERIAL SPECIFICATION SUMMARY
Specification Item Original Design
Specifications Revised
Specifications
Maximum particle size (inches) in direct contact with
the VLDPE liner 1'h 1 i4
Maximum particle size (inches) elsewhere 3 6
Compaction density (% of maximum dry density) None 85
Lift Thickness (loose) Iftl None 3
TABLE 4.2
TYPE 1 GRADATION SPECIFICATIONS
U.S. Standard Sieve Size Original Design Specifications
(% Finer by Weight) Revised Specifications
(% Finer by Weight)
~/. inch > 65 > 65
#4 45 - 95 45 - 95
#10 25 - 65 none
#40 5-30 35-9D
#200 <10 <35
