Dear Craig:
The Division understands Bear Coal Company's predicament regarding the use of
an uncalibrated instrument to collect Bear Coal's quarterly water quality
• data. Information obtained from uncalibrated instruments is unreliable and,
therefore, unuseable:
The data submitted by Bear Coal for the second quarter 1987 does not contain
data for well AA-3. Bear Coal Company is therefore, requested to obtain
three (3) water quality monitoring data sets from both AA-1 and AA-3 during
the remainder of 1987, Two of the data sets should be obtained during the
third quarter of 1987; The first data set should be obtained immediately
after receipt of the properly calibrated instrument by Bear Coal Company. The
last data set should be obtained during the last quarter of 1987. Bear Coal
must submit four complete sets of ground water field parameter data to comply
with the approved monitoring plan.
Bear Coal Company is also requested to investigate the integrity and viability
of well AA-1. Data collected from well AA-1 since July 1986 indicates that
the salinity of the ground water has increased significantly above background
levels. Electroconductivity (EC) values recorded for well AA-1 have
historically been 300 - 600 umhos/cm. Data recorded since July; 1986
indicates the electroconductivity has increased to approximately 2500
umhos/cm: Three of four recent electroconductivity values have exceeded 2200
umhos/cm.
