' Wadge Pasture shrub density was sampled with the 50 independent random samples noted as
well as 45 additional samples done in association with atwo-stage sampling trial (see below).
All shrubs, including seedlings, with root crowns found within the quadrat boundaries were
tabulated by species and by life stages as follows: Seedling, Mature, or Dead.
Shrub Density Sampling Using Two-Stage Statistical Design in Wadge Pasture
For purposes of comparison of effort and results, the Wadge Pasture was separately sampled
again for shrub density using atwo-stage statistical design as set forth in Chapter 10 of
Cochran (1977). The Wadge Pasture was divided into 20 equal-sized primary sample units and
fifteen of these were randomly chosen to receive sampling (see Map 2, "Wadge Pasture 2-stage
sampling units"). Within each of the chosen primary sample units three (3) points were
randomly chosen in the same fashion used for single stage random sampling described above. At
each of these three sample points in each of the fifteen primary sample units, 2mx50m quadrats
were located and randomly oriented in the normal manner and shrubs were tallied as described
above.
Shrub Density - Shrub Establishment Areas
In seventeen (17) areas shown on Maps land 3 (15 at Seneca II and 2 at Seneca II-W), areas of
shrub nursery stock planting were sampled to assess the survival of the plantings. Within
these areas of various shapes, a prescribed number of 2mx25m quadrats were systematically
located (i.e. uniformly spaced) and all shrubs tallied in the normal manner. In the DSS-1 area
at the Seneca II-W mine, extremely high shrub seedling density made use of quadrats even as
large as 2x25m impractical. There, a systematic sampling using 1.0 sq. m. plots was
undertaken to make counts of very dense seedlings more practical. Seven transects extending
the length of the treatment plot were evenly spaced across the width of the treatment plot. Along
each of these seven transects, fifteen (15) 1.0 sq. m. plots were placed and all woody plant
seedlings within counted by species.
Total numbers of shrub density transects in each shrub establishment area were as follows:
•
5
