Study species and type of mycorrbizal association.
Common Name Association Inocuiant Type Nursery Colonization Rate
Serviceberry endomycorrhizal custom 100%
Chokecherry endomycorrhizal commercial 90%
Wood's Rose endomycorrhizal commercial 30%
Planting of the test plots occurred during September 26, 1997. Treatment lots were handled
sepazately in order to prevent contamination between colonized and non-colonized plants. All
plants were measured in the field in order to determine initial heights.
' Data was collected during September 1998. Data collection consisted of:
1) Presence/Absence (survival)
2) Height in centimeters
' 3) Vigor (subjective rating)
4) Root examination for colonization of fungi based upon laboratory analysis
' Analysis consisted of an ANOVA test to compaze treatment means. A Multiple Range Test was
performed to rank variables which were significantly different.
Resul s
Survival Benefits. Survival was significantly different between treatments (p=0.02). The
nursery inoculation treatment (99%) survived at a significantly higher rate than either the
mycopak treatment (79%} or the control treatment (74%}. On a per species basis: 1}nursery
inoculated chokecherry (96.9%) sttrvived at signiftcantly higher rates (p=0.001) than field
inoculated seedlings and controls; 2) nursery inoculated serviceberty (98.9%) survived at
significantly higher rates (p=0.05) than field inoculation (79%) and controls (74%); and 3) no
significant differences in survival occurred between Wood's rose with nursery inoculation
(100%), field inoculation (100%), and control (84.3%). Nursery inoculated plants survived at
higher rates in all instances.
19
