1
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The first third-party monitoring sampling trip to Battle Mountain Resources, Inc.'s (BMRI)
San Luis Gold Project in Costilla County, Colorado took place on November 23 and 24,
1992. This Summary Report includes the following information: summary and assessment
of sampling activities; summary and assessment of analytical activities, and recommendations
for changes in the sampling and analytical protocol. The following documentation and data
are included as appendices in this report: Sampling and Reporting Guidelines for Third-
Party Monitor (Appendix A); Sampling Observation Documentation, consisting of copies of
field notes (Appendix B); Chain-of-Custody Documentation (Appendix C); Analytical
Results, consisting of verbatim analytical results from Core Laboratories (Appendix D), and
Laboratory Quality Control Report (Appendix E).
2.0 SUMMARY AND ASSESSMENT OF SAMPLING ACTIVITIES
One surface water location, three process points and three gre»ndwater we116 were sampled
during the November 23-24, 1992 sampling trip. The sampling locations were: RS-5 in the
Rito Seco Creek; the lower tailings pond; the upper tailings pond; the collection pond; well
M-9; well M-12, and well M-13. Three sampling quality control (QC) samples were taken:
one field blank, one duplicate (at the collection pond) and one rinse blank (taken after the
collection pond sample). A summary of the types of samples collected at each location and
the analytes determined is provided in Tables 1 and 2. Asscasr,:,nt of the sampling activities
is provided below.
Relatively short notice was provided about the first third-party sampling effort.
Consequently, some aspects of the sampling render the trip more of a "dry run" than a truly
independent monitoring effort. The bottles far the third-party sampling ware provided by
BMRI and Halepaska. After completion of field work, samples collected for the third-party
sampling were signed over to Harry Posey, from the Mined Land Reclamation Division. Dr.
Posey transported the samples to Core laboratories. There is no reason to suspect that
these two aspects of the sampling inva]idate the results. However, comparisgn of the results
presented ir. this report v.:th those from subsequent samplings will be important to verify the
independence of the first third-party monitoring trip.
The weather during the first third-party monitoring trip was extremely cold (" 10°F) with
some snow. The cold adversely affected the filtering and the performance of the field meter
at the end of the second day. Sample water began to freeze around the filter barrel;
deionized water in the squirt bottle froze around the tip; and the liquid crystal display of the
field meter froze up, making it difficult to read the meter output for well M-13, the last
RCG/Hagler, Bailly, Inc.
