face of the soil lifts. The top surface of the select fill layer shall be
scarified prior to placement of the topsoil layer.
3.2.2 Fabric Stabilized Lifts
3.2.2.1 Preparation
Before placing fabric, the surface on which it is to be placed shall be
prepared by removal of all stumps, boulders and other sharp objects. All
holes and large ruts shall be filled with material and compacted as shown on
the drawings. The surface shall be reviewed and accepted by the Contracting
Officer prior to placement of fabrics. A leveling layer of a minimum of 9
inches shall be placed below the first soil lift as indicated on the
drawings. The leveling layer shall be wrapped with fabric to prevent
erosion of material.
3.2.2.2 Installation
The fabrics shall be installed as shown on the drawings. Installation shall
be overseen and approved by the Contracting Officer. The fabrics shall be
installed with a minimum embedment length as shown on the drawings. The
fabrics shall be taut; mechanical tightening may be required to remove slack
and provide containment of underlying soils as approved by the Contracting
Officer. Soils shall be compacted in accordance with drawings and Section
02300 EARTHWORK.
No equipment shall be operated on the top surface of geosynthetics without
permission from the Contracting Officer. Select fill shall be pushed out
over geosynthetics in an upward tumbling motion so that wrinkles in
geosynthetics do not fold over. Soil shall not be dropped directly onto
geosynthetics from a height greater than 3 feet. On slopes, select fill
shall be placed from the bottom of the slope upward.
3.2.2.3 Overlap
Fabric shall be unrolled directly on the prepared surface. Fabric shall be
joined with adjacent pieces of fabric by overlapping. Adjacent sections
shall be overlapped as shown on the Drawings, or a minimum of 12 inches.
Fabric overlaps shall be reviewed by the Contracting Officer prior to
covering with overlying materials.
3.2.2.9 Anchoring/Staking of COIR Fabric
The COIR fabric shall be staked with wooden stakes as shown on the design
drawings at 3 feet on center. Fabric edges shall be staked and anchored in
a key trench along all edges as indicated on the drawings. The fabric shall
be staked along all edges, overlaps and at intervals as shown on the
drawings and as approved by the Contracting Officer.
02340-9
