The IIpper supply Ditch (sometimes known as the st. vrain <br />• Supply Canal or st. vrain Ditch), the Highland Ditch, the Rough and <br />Ready Ditch sad the Palmerton Ditch were functioning prior to 1880 <br />and the establishment of the Colorado state Water Commission. The <br />water appropriation for the four irrigation sources dates to 1862 <br />(Colorado Btate Water Engineer). These ara very early appropriation <br />dates in terms of longevity of claim. In addition, such early <br />dates reflect settlement during the Civil Aar and almost <br />immediately after the discovery of gold in 1859. <br />u <br />• 18 <br />
