c~ ~ .

STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
DATE: July 9, 1987
T0: Tom Gillis
FROM: Steve Renner
RE: DESERADO MINE ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT
As requested, I have reviewed the Deserado Annual Hydrologic Report (AHR)
submitted to the Division in compliance with the approved permit. The report
summarizes the hydrologic data collected at the mine site during the period
October 1, 1985 through September 30, 1986.
The hydrologic data compiled during the collection period indicates that the
mine is operating within the framework of the statement of probable hydrologic
consequences contained in the permit document.
During the review of the AHR, it became apparent that some of the data being
collected is not pertinent to the current disturbances at the mining
operation. Therefore, I suggest that Western Fuels, Utah submit a technical
revision to discontinue monitoring at sites SW6-1, SW11-2, SW12-1, SW31-1 and
SW33-1. Sites SW12-1 and SW11-2 have been inundated by the Taylor Draw
Reservoir, and no longer provide useful information. Sites SW6-1, SW31-1 and
SW33-1 are associated with Federal Coal Lease C-8424, and could be
discontinued until a year before mining related disturbance within this lease
area occurs. At that time, these sites should be reincorporated into the
hydrologic monitoring program, using the current monitoring frequency.
The Red Wash drainage is of interest as it is currently being undermined. WFU
has an adequate monitoring program above the current mining area. Although it
does not appear that Red Wash looses water to the mine after subsidence,
further investigation above the second longwall panel is a prudent measure to
adapt.
It is recommended that, as the second longwall panel is developed, Red Wash
site SW1-1 be moved so that it is located dust upstream of the northern panel
entry. It is thought that the extent of activity under the Red Wash drainage
warrants this change in the monitoring program. This change in location could
be incorporated into the technical revision request outlined above. The
relocated SW1-1 should be incorporated into the currently approved monitoring
schedule.
lal
cc: Michael Savage
0937E
423 Centennial.
