A single reference azea--established neazby by Peabody for the
Seneca Mine-has been designated for comparison to reclaimed azeas.
The reference area and reclaimed vegetation type will be sampled sepazately to allow
sepazate determination of sample adequacy. Sample locations will be randomly
selected using randomly generated grid coordinates overlain on a topographic map.
Herbaceous production will be detemmined by harvesting current year's herbaceous
vegetation from meter-square quadrats. Harvested material will be sepazated by life
form (grasses and fortis) and weighed. A representative number of samples will be
oven dried to determine moisture content. All green (field) weights will be
subsequently converted and reported as oven-dry weights.
Vegetation cover transects will be located in conjunction with production quadrats.
Transects will be 10 meters long. Azimuths from the point of beginning of each
transect will be randomly determined. An "optical baz" will be used to determine
"hits" at 20-centimeter intervals. (The optical baz is a frame holding five specially
designed non-magnifying telescopes. The optical baz is mounted on a tripod and is
used essentially like a point frame. The telescopes aze aimed vertically towazd the
ground. The intersection of the cross-hairs in each telescope defines a "point" or hit.
Each hit is recorded as a vegetation species, rock, litter or baze ground.) Only first
hits will be recorded. Each transect will be comprised of 50 hits.
Woody plant density will be determined by sampling belt transects. Transects will be
located parallel to vegetation cover transects. Transects will be 10 meters by 3
meters. Live shrubs will be counted within each transect.
A minimum of ten cover and woody plant density transects, and ten production
quadrats will be sampled in each area. Sample adequacy for herbaceous production,
woody plant density and cover will be determined sepazately for each area using the
sample adequacy formula given in the Division's vegetation guideline. In no
instance, however, will more than 40 quadrats or transects be sampled in any one
area. A double-tail t-test will be used to compaze vegetation cover, herbaceous
production and woody plant density of each reclaimed type to the reference area in the
event reclaimed means are lower than reference area means.
Vegetation cover data will be used for determining revegetadon success with respect
to species diversity as described in the permit application.
Field data will be tabulated and summarized in a written report. The report will also
include a table showing which revegetation success criteria have been met for the
reclaimed area.
(Revised 7/6/90)
