The species that were planted in 1972 were Ponderosa Pine and Western
Red Cedar or commonly called Juniper. Due to the lack of soil material, the
growth of the seedlings is limited.
A count was made of the Ponderosa and Cedar on 8/28/79, along with their
heights. No records were kept on the seedlings at the time of planting, so
no definite comparisons can be made.
Ponderosa Heights
29,22,14,24,36,32,23,20,9,10,
25 ,23,33,15,27,25,24,23,24,12,26,
24,23,25,10.
Total number of seedlings
25#
Average Height
22.23 Inches
Cedar Heights
42,24 ,28,34,28,30,20,38,34,32,32,31,
33,20 ,19,23,9,35,15,47,21,11,8,7,16,
18,26,16,14,7,7,17,24,20,37•
35#
23.5 Inches
Some comparisons can be made between the different areas on Zinc Hill where
the trees were planted. Some of the trees were planted on the uppermost part of
the hill, right along the base of the footwall.. Within seven these trees have
shown more growth than the trees in the other areas. Over the years soil material
has washed down from the top of the footwall to form a soil layer of about 8 ".
Farther down the hill where the gypsum bed lies, the trees are much smaller.
10. Shown here is a Juniper seedling planted at the base of the footwall.
The Juniper is approximately 30" high.
 )I1 i % I
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
22893
