WESTERN SLOPE CARBON, INC.
HAWK'S NEST MINE
ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT
1986
Background and Introduction
This report is submitted as required by stipulation number six of
Western Slope Carbon, Inc.'s Hawk's Nest Mine Permit C-016-81.
No mining operations were conducted during the year. In 1983, the
ventilation system was shut down and the portals were secured. The
hydrologic monitoring in the mine was suspended because of restricted
access to the mine and reduced potential for hydrologic impact.
This document will summarize the information as required by the amended
monitoring plan as approved by the CMLRD on May 8, 1984. It includes
May through October field data collected for Springs 8 through 11,
and the biannual complete chemistry reports. Monitoring of Crystal
Meadows Wells was suspended pursuant to a letter from Thomas A.
Schreiner, dated April 21, 1986.
Summary of Data Collected
The attached Tables 1 - 3, summarize the data collected during 1986.
There are no discernable trends that would indicate any adverse impacts
related to mining operations or the facilities that supported the mine.
Termination of mine operation in 1983, has reduced the potential for
hydrologic impact; however, surface facilities could potentially
contribute to localized water quality degradation. The analysis
conducted during 1986, has not indicated any adverse affects to water
quality.
Data submitted to the Colorado Department of Health, Water Quality
Control Division, pursuant to the requirements of the Colorado NPDES
Discharge Permit for discharges from sediment ponds, indicate that
no discharges were made during 1986.
Impact Mitigation
Western Slope Carbon, Inc. continues to employ an on-site inspector
who collects and submits all required lab samples, performs any
necessary maintenance functions on the sediment ponds, diversion ditches
and slopes as well as ensures that miminimal environmental impact
results from the presence of the mining facilities.
HLB:tIw
