Phase II
Phase II Mining will mine about 257,000 tons ofgravel (Table 1). Phase B wetland mitigation
area will be constructed towards the end of this mining phase. The 2.8 acres of wetland
vegetation and soils occurring in Mining Phase III (proposed Phase C wetland mitigation) project
area (Appendix B, W-1) will be moved to the 5.5-acre constructed wetland bench (800' x 350')
along the northwest side of Phase II Mining area. Bench substrate will be constructed with
backfilled subsoil and topsoil covered with wetland material transferred from the 2.8 acres. Bench
sloping and design will be similar to the constructed wetland in the Phase I area (Appendix B, DS-
2).
Phase III-IV
Phase III Mining area contains the largest acreage of wetlands requiring a split mitigation effort
between Mining Phases IV and V to supply enough overburden for bench construction. Gravel
mined from Phases III and IV total approximately 396,000 tons ofgravel (Table 1). Wetland
mitigation in this period proceeds under Phases C and D with benches being completed as
overburden becomes available (Appendix B, W-1). Mining and bench construction in these areas
follow similar procedures used for Phase B. Excavated wetland material will be spread evenly
over surface to form bench substrate. Wetland mitigation in Phase III Mining area proceeds
eastward from area C and is completed by removing the two elongated wetlands north of this area
and placing them in area F under Mining Phases III and IV.
Phase III-V
Under Phases III and V, approximately 629,000 tons ofgravel will be mined (Table 1). Removed
overburden will be used to complete constructed wetland benches in the Phase III sector under
Phases E and F. Total mitigation efforts under Phases C-F will result in 8.6 acres of constructed
wetlands replacing the 5.5 acres of excavated wetlands. This breakdown of excavated wetlands
to constructed wetlands is as follows: 1.9 acres of wetlands from Mining Phase III (proposed
Phase D wetland mitigation) into the 3.7-acre constructed wetlands bench (340' x 470') in Phase
C; 1.46 acres of wetlands from Mining Phase III (proposed Phase E wetland mitigation) into a
2.18-acre bench (340' x 280') in Phase D; 0.85 acres residing in Mining Phase III (proposed Phase
F wetland mitigation) forma 1.7-acre bench (340' X 220') in Phase E and; the 1.0 acre excavated
from the two elongated wetlands (north and contiguous to Mining Phase III) placed in Phase F
forming about 1.2 acres (Appendix B, W-1).
The remaining site wetland acreage requiring mitigation is located in the Phase V Mining area.
During mitigation Phase G approximately 0.5 acres of wetlands will be excavated using wetland
soils and vegetation to create a 0.75-acre constructed wetland bench located north of pit abutting
undisturbed riparian area (Appendix B, W-1). Bench design and construction will be similar to
other reconstructed wetlands with substrate elevation corresponding to saturated conditions
conducive to sustaining wetlands.
2-4
