CE&I STEEL CORPORATION
CANON DOLCk1ITE QUARRY
File C1o. M-77-376
ANNUAL REPORT to the MLRD
September 1989 - September 1990
(1) CE&I (Fountain Sand & Gravel) operated the Canon Lblomite Quarry during
the report period, however, no additional acres were disturbed. All
active operations are restricted to areas already disturbed by past
mining. Operations have consisted entirely of shipments of previously
crashed and screened stone. No additional acres, previously
undisturbed, will be disturbed during the remaining life of the quarry.
(2) No additional acreage was reclaimed this period, however approximately
7 acres of the disturbed areas west of the activ~uarry area have been
covered with additional topsoil substitute mat~rial and seeded.

(3) All of the inactive quarry areas, approximately 25 acres, have been ',
graded and reseeded. In addition the major road cuts were graded an
seeded in 1986. Eecause no topsoil was available for many of these
areas, revegetation success has been sporadic. CE&I is currently using
canal sediments, when available, as a topsoil replacement on many of
the areas with the poorest soil conditions. As these areas were
covered with sediments, the approved seed mixture was applied.
(4) The species planted include Crested & Thickspike wheatgrass, Sideoats ? S
e
-.~`f
Drama, Russian Wildrye, Indian Ricegrass, Fourwing Saltbush Palmer h
,
Penstemon and Yellow Sweetclover as per the approved seed mixture.
(5) The canal sediments are rich in organic material. Approximately 3 to 6
inches of the material are being deposited as the material becomes
available.
~ (6) The revegetation success of those areas which were treated with the ~~
canal sediments show a high success rate for seeded and inv ; e et «~
/~ 7
s cis' Much of this is due to the high percentage of organic
material and native seeds in the sediments. The rains this summer have
also been very beneficial. CF&I is trying to apply canal sediments to
condition the soil over areas which require intensive treatment,
however because of the limited availability of this material it will
take some years to cover all of these areas.
(7) Mining will continue at a very reduced rate for some years to come,
however all future mining will be restricted to those areas previously
disturbed by mining. No undisturbed areas will be affected by future
mining.
(8) This report is current as of August 1, 1990.
