This was primarily due to the very active construction market throughout
the Colorado Springs area. Mining is proceeding eastward into the previously stripped land and
considerable new land has been stripped on the east and south sides of the pit. It is likely chat a
significant amount of additional land will need to be stripped during the next year. Of course, this all
depends on the amount of economic activity and associated market.
Annual Report Maps: The enclosed maps show the primary areas of disturbance and the type of
disturbance occurring in each area. The current maps reflect an updated portrayal of the operation zones
as based upon aerial photography taken before the preparation of the annual report. The reports are also
being prepared with the aid of GPS to locate key boundaries of disturbances.
Affected Lands: The amount of affected land has increased in the last year. The same processes of
operating the pit are being used as has been used in the past. This operation is quite similar to the way it
was last year, although larger. The only ocher significant change is the continued extension of the
conveyor so the plant does not need to be moved.
Revegetation: The site is stable and is not subject to erosion. No additional revegetation was done in
the last year. Topsoil has been stockpiled around the north edge in preparation for final topsoiling of
the slope south of the stockpiles.
Expected Activity (2002): Mining will proceed eastward and especially southward into currently
stripped land and new, undisturbed land. With the acceleration in production, it is possible that 35 to 40
new acres could be opened in the next year.
Bonding: This operation is covered by a self bond. During the last year, a bonding problem discovered
by the Division was corrected and a succession of operator transferred the operation from Centennial
Materials to Schmidt Construction (no substantive change; only procedural). Enclosed is a copy of the
most recent Divisional Balance Sheet for Schmidt Construction. Schmidt Construction is a subsidiary of
Edw. C.
