<br />1 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />EFFLUENT MONITORING <br />A large number of sedimentation r_ontrol structures at Mine 1 and Mine 2 are <br />monitored. Of i,lrese, only Stations 39, 57, 84 and 87 at Mine 1 had <br />significant flows in 1989. None of the stations at Mine T_ had significant <br />flows in 1988. Station 91 at Mine Plo. 2 did discharge for approximately two <br />weeks in the spring of 1989. .This was the first recorded discharge from <br />this site. l•lost of the Mine 1 ponds are in the Foidel Creek drainage, only <br />Pond FI (Site 57) is in the Middle Creek drainage. All of the Mine 2 ponds <br />are in t.lre Fish Creek drainage. Ponds D (Site 84) and G (Site 55) at Mine <br />No. 1 are effected by the underground operations. Pond D receives inflow <br />from the underground mine discharge water and the waste ror_k disposal area <br />as well as runoff from the surface mine. Pond G receives runoff from the <br />surface facilities of the underground and surface mine. <br />' Flows <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />1 <br />1 <br />The flow rate data for the effluent stations is summarized on Table 56. The <br />historic discharge data for the ponds with significant 1989 water discharges <br />at Mine 1 ar•e presented in figures 42 and 45 through 48. Discharges from <br />these ponds are effected by the mininy activities, seasonal variations, and <br />spoil springs. All of the plots show the typical seasonal variation with <br />High Flows din•iny spring runoff. Ilistorically, discharges from the ponds <br />ceased in flee summer and did not begin again until the next spring. Three <br />ponds, A (Site 39), D (Site 84) and F (Site 87), began discharging <br />year-round in late 1984. This is due to the spoil springs located in the <br />drainages of Ponds A and F and the underground mine discharge to Pond D. In <br />1989 Ponri II also had a very small discharge during the irrigation season. <br />Pond A new leas a base flow of appr~xirnately 1.4 cfs, Pond D 0.23 cfs and <br />Pond G 0.1 r.fs. These flows have changed Fo1de1 Creek from an annual to a <br />perennial stream. Peak discharges from the ponds do not seem to have <br />changed significantly because the spoil spring water would have discharged <br />as snowmelt r•rrnoff anyway. The 1989 discharges were generally lower for the <br />naturally c:ontrollerl Fonds I.han discharges in flee previous years. <br />' - 10 - <br />
