• 2002 ANNUAL HYDROLOGY REPORT
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The following Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) presents hydrologic monitoring data from the Twentymile Coal
Company's (TCC's) Foidel Creek Mine site in Oak Creek, Colorado for the 2002 water year. Hydrologic
monitoring locations aze described below. This AHR is provided in fulfillment of reporting requirements under
the Colorado State Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG) Permit No. C-82-056. Unless otherwise indicated,
all references to "2002" hi this report refer to the 2002 Water Yeaz (October 1, 2001 through September 3Q
2002). Monitoring results for prior water years are presented in previous AHRs, although selected historical
data (period of record - POR) aze summarized in some of the tables and figures within this AHR.
Following Section 2.0's discussion of Site Location and Background, this AHR provides Section 3.0 on the TCC
2002 Hydrologic Monitoring Program, which in turn is divided into eight subsections:
3.1) Groundwa[ermonitoring,
3.2) Alluvial groundwater monitoring,
3.3) Bedrock Surface water monitoring,
3.4) Natura] springs monitoring,
3.5) Spoil springs monitoring,
3.6) Mine water discharge sites monitoring,
3.7) CDPS discharge sites monitoring, and
3.8) Mine inflow monitoring.
Next follows Section 4.0, discussing Subsidence Impacts for local creeks (Fish, Foidel, and Middle Creeks), and
lastly Section S.Q, Summary and Conclusions. Tables and Figures aze appendices located at [he back of this
AHR.
2.0 SITE LOCATION AND BACKGROUND
The TCC Foidel Creek Mine site is located approximately 25 miles southwest of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, at
the south end of Twentynrile Pazk (see Figure 1). This is an active underground coal mining operation, having
affected a cumulative total of about 6,700 acres in south Routt County through 2002. In 2002, TCC mining
affected around 1,300 acres. The primary TCC surface facilities cover on the order of 800 acres, including
discharge pond and railroad loadout azeas. The Foidel Creek Mine portals and surface facility areas aze bordered
by strip mine spoils from the former Colorado Yampa Coal Company (CYCC). Trench and berm rockfall
mitigation structures, located north of the primary TCC facilities, cover approximately 30 acres. The coal refuse
pile at TCC covers approximately 35 acres. Other associated satellite TCC support facilities contribute an
. additional 10 to 15 acres. The associated Fish Creek Tipple site is located approximately 20 miles southwest of
Steamboat Springs a[ the north end of Twentymile Park, covering an area of approximately 15 acres.
1
