SHELTON, Director
Richard D. Lamm
Governor
January 12, 1984
T0: ,Dan Mathews
FROM: Roy L. Cori •~
RE: Monitoring Red cti n and Review of the Annual Hydrologic Report for
the Grand Mesa Coal Company, Red Canyon Mine, File No. C-034-81
The annual hydrologic report submitted by Grand Mesa Goal Company for the Red
Canyon Mine contains a compilation of water quality analyses, ground water
levels, and flow measurements. This report does not contain 1) analyses of
the data collected since the Kaman Tempo Report, September, 1982,
or 2) assessments of the impacts which the mine is having on the hydrology in
the permit and adjacent areas. The locations of mine inflows should be mapped
on an up-to-date mine workings map and included as part of the annual report.
Grand Mesa Coal Company should analyze the hydrologic data which it collects.
This analysis should then be used in assessing the Hydrologic impacts of the
Red Canyon Mine (see draft findings document, Stipulation No. 4). These
analyses (reductions of data) and assessment should be submitted to the
Division as the annual hydrologic report.
The applicant's request for monitoring reduction is warranted. Attachments A
and B contain those reductions which I deem appropriate at this time. Further
reductions may be granted after reviewing submittals of future data and
hydrologic reports.
/mt
Attachments
cc: Brian Munson
Jim Herron
Doc.
