Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (Division) has fmished its review of the Bowie Resources
LLC (BRL) submittal of the 2003 Annual Report and has the following comments and questions.
2003 Annual Hvdrolow Report (AHRI
The Division agrees with BRL that the results of the 2003 AHR support BRL's contention that the
hydrologic regime has not been adversely impaired by mining operations at the Bowie No. 2 Mine.
Operational surface and ground water analyses results remain consistent with baseline values. As has been
the case in previous yeazs, quite a few monitoring sites were dry due to the dry weather. The Division has
several questions concerning the 2003 AHR.
1. The permit application text, beginning on page 2.05-77, describes the sampling requirements for
the vazious.hydrologic monitoring locations azound the mine site. However, there appeaz to be
omissions, inadvertently deleted through previous permit revisions. These omissions include
descriptions of the hydrologic sampling requirements for Bound water wells, springs, the Deer
Trail Ditch and small azea exemptions. Also, several locations are not included in the list of
monitoring sites found on pages 2.05-79 through 2.05-81 of the permit application. These sites aze
spring 53-1, well DD-NM4x98-27, and ponds P33-10 and P33-11. Please revise the permit
applicatio t through a minor revision to include descriptions of all of the hydrologic
Boring requirements.
2. On page Tl-3 of the 2003 AHR, it is stated that the Deer Trail Ditch water monitoring locations,
Deer-low and Deer-up, are to be sampled in August for the surface water lab pazameter list number
2, found on page 2.05-85 of the permit text and on page TZ-1 of the 2003 AHR. However, it
appeazs that list I was used for the sampling for Deer-low and Deer-up in 2003, as shown in
Figures 104 and 106 of the 2003 AHR. Please explain.
3. The surface water lab pazameter list number 2, found on page 2.05-85 of the permit text and on
page T2-1 of the 2003 AHR, lists chlorine as a required sampling pazameter. On pages 2.05-77
and 2.05-78 of the permit application and on page Tl-3 of the 2003 AHR, it is stated that the
North Fork of the Gunnison River sampling points NFG-low and NFG-up aze to be sampled in
August for list number 2. However, chlorine is not listed in the 2003 AHR as having been sampled
for NFG-low and NFG-up. Please explain.
Office of Office of Colorado
Alined Land Reclamation Ardive and Inartive Minec Ganlnol~al Gwav
