Kiger Division Director
Colowyo Coal Company
5731 State Highway 13
Meeker, CO 81641
RE: Colowyo Coal Mine; C-81-19
TR-21: Approval of Revision
Dear Mr. Kiger:
The Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division proposes to approve
your technical revision application to begin auger mining of Auger
Mining Area fl as proposed. This approval is with the
understanding that Colowyo is committed to marking the location of
auger mining on the ground in such a manner that the area augered
can be located at time of bond release.
In a memo to me dated May 14, 1993, Shawn Smith and Jim Pendleton
of the Division requested that monuments be placed over the site to
be augered in order to monitor for subsidence. As you pointed out,
since the area to be undermined has not yet been backfilled and
graded, it would be impossible to separate the effects of fill
settlement from the effects of subsidence due to auger mining.
After a follow-up consultation with Jim Pendleton, the Division
accepts Colowyo's assertion that placing monuments on the site
would not provide accurate information in this case and that
marking the site will be sufficient for detecting major problems
associated with auger mining.
As a result of this revision, Colowyo's bond liability will not
increase. The Division thanks you for your patience and wishes you
success in your efforts to auger mine additional reserves.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
'~ ~
Stephen F.
