Area B - 1985, Central Between Two Roads
This area was similar to A in its overall low diversity of species.
However, the total vegetation cover was much lower due mostly to the lack
of warm season grass cover (prairie sandreed was not intercepted) and
reduced cover of alfalfa. Cool season grasses dominated (most notably
smooth brome (Bromus inermis) and crested wheatgrass, while alfalfa
remained an important contributor to overall cover.
Area C - 1986, West of Road
This stand is very diverse (13 total species in sample data) and is
dominated by warm season grasses (46.5% relative cover). Dominant
individual species include switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) and russian
thistle with intermediate levels (3-5% absolute cover) of prairie
sandreed, crested wheatgrass, western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii ),
slender wheatgrass (Agropyron trachycaulum) and prairie sunflower. No
perennial forb species were sampled.
Area D - 1986, Central Between Two Roads
This area is also relatively diverse (11 total species) and again is
dominated by warm season grasses (57.9% relative cover) , though russian
thistle is the dominant individual species. Prairie sandreed and sand
bluestem (Andropogon hallii ) are the most important grasses, with blue
grama (Boutelova gracilis) and western wheatgrass present in intermediate
amounts. Again no perennial forb species were present.
Area E - 1986, East of Road
Fourteen species were sampled. Warm season grasses heavily dominated
(73.2% relative cover) . Blue grama, prairie bluestem, and prairie
sandreed were dominant species. Russian thistle was present in small
amounts and was the only annual species sampled. Alfalfa was also
present, though in small amounts.
Area F - 1987, West of Road
The diversity of warm and cool season grasses is low, though warm species
grasses (blue grama, prairie sandreed, and sand dropseed (Sporobolus
cryptandrus) ) did account for 34.4% relative cover. However, the stand
is heavily dominated by russian thistle (51 .5% relative cover) . Cool
season grasses accounted for only 6% of the total plant cover.
Area G - 1987, Central Between Two Roads
This area has the same warm season species as Area F; however, these
species contribute much less absolute and relative cover. Russian
thistle accounts for 84.0% of the total plant cover. Cool season grasses
contribute 2.5% total relative cover.
