'
WALDEN COAL COMPANY
Annual Hydrologic Report
October 1, 1987 - September 30, 1988
Surface Water
Water flowed in Mann Draw across the Bourg property from March 21,
1988 until April 26, 1988 due to snowmelt runoff. Flow measurements
were taken at the weir (Exhibit A) and water samples were collected at
the points where Mann Draw enters and leaves the Bourg property (Exhibit
B). It should be noted that water leaving the property was generally
significantly cleaner than that entering the property.
Water discharged from two of the four sedimentation ponds during
the period of extreme snowmelt runoff. Samples were taken from ponds A
and C as they discharged and the results can be found in Exhibit B.
Exhibits C are the "Addendum to Discharge Monitoring Reports" filed with
the Colorado Department of Health in conjunction with the quarterly
C.P.D.E.S. reports. These give possible explanations as to why
discharge from these ponds was not in compliance for pH and total
settlable solids.
Ground Water
Ground water depth was monitored at eleven approximately 25 foot
deep monitoring wells in Mann Draw on a monthly basis (Exhibits D). It
can be seen from the results that as backfilling of the pit progressed,
water levels in the wells increased. Well depths were measured in
August, September, and October, however those results are currently not
available as they are being stored in Jackson County. As soon as those
results become available, I will forward them to the Division. The
depths taken in November and December indicate some slight lowering of
water levels with the onset of winter.
A water sample (Exhibit E), was collected from well 30C in June,
the only time when there was sufficient water to sample. Results of
that sample show no significant differences from samples taken in
previous years.
Summary
Reclamation at the Bourg Mine was completed in October, 1988. All
surface water drainage will be controlled through the use of terraces as
approved in Permit Revision #1. Ground water will be monitored in two
wells in the Spring and Fall of each year. It is expected that water
levels will stabilize at pre-mine levels. Surface and ground water
quality did not and is not expected to change as the result of mining
activities.
