It has a
profile similar to that described as representative of
the series, but the depth to the underlying material is
less than 11 inches, and in most places there is a larger
amount of gravel and cobbles on the surface. Included
with this soil in mapping are small areas of Rough
broken land and St. Elmo gravelly sandy loam, 9 to
45 percent slopes.
Surface runoff is rapid, and the hazard of erosion
is severe. All of this soil is in grass and is used for
grazing. Some areas have an overstory of pinyon pine
and juniper. (Capability unit VIIe-1, nonirrigated;
woodland suitability group 3; Dry bountain Outwash
range site)
St. Elmo gravelly sandy loam, 1 to 3 percent slopes
(See).-This soil is on high terraces in the souther~i part
of Chaffee County between Salida and 11-Iaysville.
Areas generally are Im~g and narrow. This soil has
the profile described as representative of the series.
Included with it in mapping are small areas of Man-
hattan sandy loam, 1 to 3 percent slopes.
Surface runoff is slow, and the hazard of erosion is
slight. About half the acreage of this soil is in native
grass and is used for grazing livestock. The rest is in
irrigated hay, mainly alfalfa. (Capability unit IVs-I,
irrigated, VIe-3, nonirrigated; Dry Mountain Outwash
range site)
St. Elmo gravelly sandy loam, 9 to 45 percent slopes
(SeF).-This soil is on terrace edges in the southern part
of Chaffee County between Salida and Maysville.
Areas generally are long and very narrow in shape.
This soil has a profile similar to that described as rep-
resentative of the series, but it has steeper slopes.
Surface runoff is medium to rapid, and the hazard
of erosio~i is moderate to high. This soil has a cover
of grass that is used for limited grazing, Some areas
have an overstory of pinyon pine and juniper.
