Grisenti Farms Gravel Pit
2007 Annual Report
Castle Concrete Company
M-2001-005
Overview of Permit Year. The 2006-2007 operating year has been very eventful. Mining
continued in the Phase one area as normal until the pit and plant area were inundated by a
flood along Brush 1-Iollow Creek on July 5~h. This practically shut down the operation for
the month of)uly.
Annual Report Map: The annual report map included in the report shows the current
affected lands.
Affected lands: During the first half of the year, up until July, the operation proceeded as
had occurred in the past. The operation was expanded in the phase one area following the
permitted plan.
Duc to intense monsoonal moisture in the Colorado Springs-Pueblo-Canon City triangle a
flood event was created along Brush Hollow Creek. Brush Hollow Creek travels through a
culvert below Highway 115 before winding southward between our pit and process area and
then into the Arkansas River. On July 5~h 2006 intense rains in the area raised the level of
the creek causing debris accumulation. The debris clogged the Highway 115 culvert on the
west side creating a "dam" behind which a large body of water accumulated. Eventually the
large volume of water was released as it cut through the highway. The sudden release of
water overwhelmed the creek forcing water over the banks into our pit on the west side and
plant area on the cast side before entering the Arkansas River.
It took approximately 28 days to dewater the pit and rebuild the conveyer to proceed with
the mining operation. 1n the meantime aggregates were sold off existing stockpiles.
Damage done was to the scale and water undercut the fuel tank. Fortunately no fuel was
spilled.
In the beginning of tlugust the operation was back to full production and mining continued
in phase one following the permitted plan. Anew sediment basin was constructed in the
southeast corner of the pit. The mining has reached its northern boundary and is continuing
westward.
'T'here is currently 32.81 acres of affected land.
Reclamation: The slope along the north side of the pit is being worked on as equipment is
available.
Expected Activity: During the 2007-2008 permit year, mining activity in the Phase I area
will continue toward the west.
