iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
.onOOrm Cnek Mlne
FOURTH QUARTER 2001
ENGINEERING INSPECTION
EAST YARD AND WEST VALLEY FILL
GOB DISPOSAL PILES
The approved Oxbow Mining, LLC Mine permit document includes a requirement for quarterly
inspections of coal mine waste piles for stability. The inspection is to be performed by a registered
engineer or other qualified professional specialist, who is experienced.in the construction of earth and
rockfill embankments.
On December 27, 2001, a visual inspection was performed ofthe East Yard and West Valley Fill gob
disposal areas. The East Yard gob disposal area has reached its design capacity, and no new gob
material has been placed since June of 2001. The East Yard pile is currently being covered with a
subsoil cap, ranging from four to eight feet thick. Nothing was observed during the inspection that
would indicate the pile has a potential for failure. Safety berms are required on the downhill edge of
the pile by the Mine Safery and Health Administration.
The West Valley Fill has continued to receive gob material. Approximately three feet of material has
been added since the last quarter. Compaction tests were performed on June 29, 2001, and October
22, 2001. Gob material has consistently passed compaction tests. Compaction tests are required, as
necessary, based on the amount of material added to the waste area. Compaction tests are planned as
material is added to the waste area.
Inspected by:
Under Direction of.
Benjamin
Colorado
rr •-.;~
P.O Box 535 3737 Highway 133
TEL (9 7 0 j 9 2 9- 5 1 2 2
Engineer No. 34286
Somerset , C o l o r a d o 8 1 x 3 4 U S A
F A x (9 7 0) 9 2 9- 5 1 7 7
