Dept. of Natural Resources
Scott Jones, the Environmental Engineer for Snowmass Coal
Company told me that you called him yesterday inquiring about the
June 1984 mine inflow data. Scott has forwarded that information
to me previously in order that management could consider the new
data's relationship with our current plans regarding mitigation of
possible depletions caused by mine inflows.
I'm sure the Division will review the June 1984 data in a -
similar fashion. We are impressed that while mine inflow has
increased during a melt event for an above average snowpack, that
much of the increase is not in areas near the creeks. Specifically
note Mine II1 area 5 and Mine Ili area 7 and 8. An apparent exception,
looking at the June 1984 data, would be Mine IF1 areas 16-20, the mine
workings near Middle Thompson Creek. Those flows have been decreasing
considerably with the end of the snow melt season. We still believe,
therefore, there is minimum of hydrologic connection with Middle
Thompson Creek and the major source for water coming into the mine
roof in the designated areas 16-20 is snow melt. We recommend that
additional data be reviewed for Mine IF1 areas 16-20 in the late fall
in order that the data base be expanded to be as meaningful as possible.
Three copies of the June 1984 mine inflow data including mine
inflow maps for both Mine Ill and Mine Ili are attached. Scott Jones
will be on vacation until September 10, 1984. If you have any questions
or comments before that time, please direct them to me.
Very truly yours,
~~~s. ~
William S.
