a
Parrnittee: WHI~ATER BUILDING MATERIALS CORP • PAGE 2
Permit *: M-77-729
Operation Name: WHITEWATER 500 PIT
Anniversary Date: 09/22/97
We will deal specifically with each of the Annual Report
requirements as outlined in Rule 1.15 of the Rules and Regula-
tions, and in the annual notice letter.
(1) Mining continued in Stages 2, & D as approved, on the areas
previously stripped. Mining disturbed 7.8Q acres t in Stage
2; and 2.08 ac. ± in Stage as shown on the Annual Report Map
(green). The Plant Site in Stages w, Z and 2 is still in
use (lite yellow). we have 9.62 acres in Stage 2 and 1.82
in Stage D stripped ready for mining (purple). The power-
line in the east central part of Stage 2 was removed this
year (red line). This means we will initialize Option 1 of
the approved mining plan. To refresh your memory, option 1
allowed us to create a single lake in Stage 2 and to mine
the gravel from under the powerlines instead of having two
lakes separated by a narrow dike.
(2) Most of the reclamation is complete in Stage 1 at this time.
We have monitored the planting done last year. Please refer
to Map (kl from the 1996 annual report for those areas. We
planted 30 seedling Sumac trees on May 9, 1997, in the
southwest corner of Stage 1. Approximately 508 have sur-
vived to date. We are preparing to create the slopes along
the west and south sides of the lake in Stage 2. The mate-
rial needed to do this is stockpiled in the areas shown on
the map (blue).
All the revegetation areas in Stages X, Y and 1 are resoiled
ready for seeding. We have been monitoring the slopes in
this area. These areas are beginning to show vegetation
growth consistent with the surrounding area. we have 800
YD3 of topsoil stored in Stage 1 and 4,500 YD3 in Stage 2
(orange).
(3) We will mine on 9.62 acres ± in Stage 2 this year (purple)
and on the 1.82 acres t stripped in Stage D (purple). If
more area is needed we will resume stripping towards the
east side of Stage 2 and move into Stage E.
(4) The amendment submitted in 1981 explained that until we stop
dewatering Stage 1 the chances of establishing vegetation in
Stages X, Y and the banks of Stage 1, are very slim because
of the very arid conditions in this area. we have found
that this was true. Now that the lake has been stable for a
year natural invasion of grasses and shrubs have begun to
occur. Bank sloping and grading will continue once mining
is completed on the shore line in Stage 2, that will not be
disturbed in the future.
