Septemtrer 2002 3
Energy Fue/s Coal, Inc. 200! Aanua/ Hydrology Report
Water Balance Water Use and Consumptive Use
Water consumptively used by the Southfield Mine during the reporting period is estimated at
6.6 ac-ft as shown on Table 2. Consumptive uses shown on Table 2 include pumping from
the Corley Well (January only), domestic use, and pond evaporation. Use of the Corley Well
was terminated as of the end of January 2001.
The primary 'use' of water at the mine since operations ceased is pond evaporation. The
remaining small uses of water during the reporting period include domestic use, equipment
washing, and outside dust suppression during reclamation operations.
Water balance within the mine is a comparison of the consumptive use of the mine and the
estimated input and output water in the water handling system. Water pumped into the system
from the Corley Mine Well, shown on Table 2, totalled 1.9 ac-ft during the reporting period.
The estimated total consumptive use during the corresponding period was 6.6 ac-ft. Water
dischazged to the stream system was approximately 4.4 ac-ft. This comparison of input,
consumptive use, and discharged water quantities illustrates the water balance within the
mine.
-.;
- ~ ~ - - NPDES-Disctiarpe"s'to Streaiiis = -
Water discharged to the stream system during the period of this report totalled approximately
4.4 ac-ft, as shown on to Table 3. This amount of discharge is below average compared to,
previous reporting periods due to drought conditions.
Water dischazges were treated and managed through Southfield's surface water handling
system depicted on: Figure 2._ Portions.of. the__ surface water, handling system were, being.,
~~~ elimmated,lr9 reclarriattatt a£'tlie end o"f;#~Ete-repo~ing~eitod mclu~ing~emo-v'.al of`3 of the 5`
- -ponds-at the~mme site.
Water quality data for discharges to streams are summarized on Table 3. A review of these
data indicate that all discharges were within NPDES permit limitations. All samples submitted
for Acute WET testing from Outfall 004 were in compliance. These data indicate that
Southfield's water treatment system effectively reduces the potential of significant impacts to
State waters.
