Lochhead <br />Executive Dueclor <br />Michael 8. long <br />Division Director <br />The Division of Minerals and Geology has completed review of the 1997 Annual Hydrology Report for the <br />Raton Creek Mine. <br />Manitorino Frequency <br />The hydrologic monitoring plan presented on page 522 of the approved permit requires monthly <br />visits with measurement of water level, temperature, pH, and E.C. for the Refuse well and the <br />Iuppa well. No information was presented in the 1997 report which indicates monthly visits were <br />conducted. Please submit this information or provide an explanation for these omissions. <br />2. Who visits the sediment pond and the permanent diversion on a weekly basis to check for, and <br />measure, discharge and field parameters, if necessary? <br />Monitoring frequency, specific to the laboratory sampling requirements, was met on asemi-annual <br />basis for the Iuppa well and on a quarterly basis for the Refuse well. <br />Water Quantity and Quality <br />No significant changes due to mining have occurred regarding water levels in the two monitoring <br />wells. Water quality shows no degradation affecting any probable use. Total Dissolved Solids <br />downgradient of the refuse pile have increased slightly but are within the predicted levels. <br />Please respond to the above issues within 30 days of receipt of this letter.
