These are hydrology, soils, and vegetation. <br />Thus, wetland areas must: <br />1) Periodically or permanently be inundated or have <br />saturated soils; <br />2) Have vegetation consisting of species typically adapted <br />for life in saturated soil conditions; and <br />3) Have soils showing evidence of development under <br />anaerobic conditions that occur during periods of <br />j prolonged soil saturation. <br />J When wetland indicators of ALL three parameters were present, <br />the area was considered to be wetland. When indicators of ANY of <br />the three parameters were absent, the area was considered to be <br />either non-wetland or an atypical situation. <br />t <br />B. Field Identification <br />Field reconnaissances necessary to complete preliminary <br />wetland maps were conducted during Map of 1987 at a mapping scale <br />of 1"=400'. Wetland determinations were made in the field based <br />on the Corps multiple-parameter approach in conjunction with <br />methods as outlined in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers <br />Delineation Manual (1987). Three specific parameters were <br />sampled as described below: <br />Vegetation: The dominant species at a given observation point <br />were recorded within a 5 foot radius for herbs and shrubs, and at <br />a 30 foot radius for trees and woody vines. Wetland indicator <br />' status of each of the dominants was determined using the U.S. <br />Army Corps of Engineer plant list for Central Plains, Region 5. <br />Soils: At each observation point a test pit was dug with a <br />diameter of 12" and depth of 15". The soil matrix below the <br />organic zone was described using Munsell (1975) soil color <br />charts. The presence of any and all wetland soil indicators such <br />as bedding planes in sandy substrate, gleying, mottling, build up <br />of hydrogen sulfide, and iron and manganese concretions were <br />recorded. <br />Hydrology: Percent soil saturation in the matrix was recorded. <br />Hydrologic soil indicators such as drainage patterns, drift <br />lines, sediment deposits, and watermarks were also observed and <br />recorded. <br />Observation points were established in each wetland area. If <br />initial results were questionable, additional observation points <br />were established. All results were recorded on the original <br />field maps. <br />C. Corps of Engineer Field Verification <br />An on-site field meeting for the purpose of wetland boundary <br />verification at Dowe Flats was held on September 11th, 1987. <br />Those in attendance were Mr. Terry McKee (COE, Denver), Mr. Mike <br />Dollaghan, Mr. Mike Figgs, h1s. Laurie Rink (AWC), and Mr. Karl <br />Birkeland IAWC). Preliminary wetland boundaries were agreed <br />upon. Final wetland maps have been produced and s letter of <br />concurrence from the Corps of Engineers has been received. <br />
