-9-
drainageways. Gentle sloping topography Within the basin lends
• itself to enlargement of adjacent wetland areas and
diversification of wetland types. For example:
1) with simple exclusion of livestock, lateral extent of
wetlands may naturally amplify. If livestock removal is
scheduled in the near future, it may be advisable to contact the
Corps and request credit for wetland enhancement. Pre-application
wetland credit, also referred to sa wetland "banking", can be
negotiated between the Corps and AWC.
2) minor earthwork and introduced plantings can extend these
wetlands even further if hydrologic requirements can be met with
natural flows. Additional hydrologic studies may be required to
insure success.
Although not considered "in kind" replacement, an open water
pool creates a type of aquatic ecosystem providing many functions
including wildlife and fishery habitat, food chain support,
nutrient retention and removal, and sediment trapping. In
addition, creation of a reservoir pool can result in development
of fringe wetlands. Some wetland can be expected to develop
naturally while other wetland can be encouraged with grading,
construction of islands, installation of check-dams, and
introduced plantings. Fringe wetlands are not entirely
successful in situations where the reservoir water level
fluctuates widely.
~•
•
