IX. SUbIl~IARY AND CONCLUSIONS
A characterization of the historic record study area was undertaken in 1996 to verify
this azea as suitable for use in establishing historic record revegetation success criteria
for the West Elk Mine. A quantitative evaluation of the precipitation regime, soils, and
vegetation was conducted. Results from those investigations revealed that the historic
record study area and the historic record vegetation community were representative of
vegetation communities found within and adjacent to the mine site, and was
representative of the type and character of the vegetation community to be established
on the post-mining land surface.
lZuantitative vegetation sampling of four parameters was undertaken at the historic
record vegetation community in 1996. Based on the prevailing precipitation regime for
the 1996 growing season, it was established that the 1996 historic record vegetation
community parameter values are representative of dry conditions at the vegetation
community.
-I>~
