STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Depanmenl of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman 51., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 802U3
Phone: 1303) 866-35fi7
FA%: (303) A3b8106
October 24, 1996
Mr. Thomas C. Anderson
Oxbow Carbon & Minerals
P. O. Box 535
Somerset, CO 81434
Re: 1995 Annual Hydrologic Monitoring Report; Sanborn Creek Mine;
Permit No. C-81-022
Dear Mr. Anderson:
I~~~~
DEPARTMEtJ'T OF
NATURAL
RESOURCES
Roy Romer
Governor
lames S. Lochhead
Executive Director
h1¢hael B. long
On~s~on Director
The Division has reviewed the 1995 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) for the Sanborn
Creek Mine. This letter presents the Division's comments and recommendations regarding
the 1995 AHR.
The operator did a good job in collecting and reporting the required water monitoring data
in accordance with the approved plan. Only minor deviations from the approved water
monitoring plan are noted for the frequency of data collection. It is noted that groundwater
monitoring well WSC DH12 could not be sampled at the required time in June, 1995
because the well was dry. Springs SP-1 thrdugh SP-6 were not sampled in April, 1995, and
springs SP-4 and SP-5 were not monitored in May, 1995. Samples could not be obtained
from these springs due to poor ground conditions rendering the springs inaccessible.
Colorado Discharge Permit System (CDPS) limitations were met for all discharges from the
Sanborn Creek Mine. Outfall 011 was the only discharge point that had a discharge from
the mine during 1995.
The Division has the following specific comments on the 1995 AHR.
1. Please provide a Table of Contents to the front of the report identifying the
Appendices and Maps contained in the report.
2. It would be very helpful to have well completion information provided in the report.
If available, please provide well construction details in a report table added to the
AHR.
