1
' Speer Property Mine Permit
Environmental Sampling
'
1.0 Introduction
' The Speer Property, located at the intersection of 120`" Ave and Old Brighton Road,
near the town of Henderson, is the former site of a commercial aerial pesticide and
herbicide applicator (crop duster). The current owner of the property, Asphalt
' Specialties Company, is seeking to mine the sand and gravel reserves. Because of the
possible presence of residual pesticides and herbicides in groundwater and soils, it was
decided to obtain environmental samples and present the results with the sand and
' gravel mine permit application.
Banks and Gesso, LLC, subcontracted Grant Environmental, Inc. (Grant), an
environmental and engineering consulting firm, to obtain soil and groundwater samples
' at selected locations. These locations are shown in Figure 1. The soil and groundwater
samples obtained were analyzed for pesticides and herbicides using the following EPA
' methods:
• EPA Method 8081 A, Organochlorine Pesticides;
• EPA Method 8082, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs);
• EPA Method 8041, Organophosphorous Compounds by Gas Chromatography;
• EPA Method 8151 A, Chlorinated Herbicides by Gas Chromatography.
The data summary tables in Section 3, Analytical Results, list the specific compounds
analyzed and their results using these methods.
'
2.0 Description of Activities
' Soil and groundwater samples were collected at the Speer property between January 13
and January 20, 2000. The field activities included sampling surficial and shallow soils
at five locations; drilling and sampling five soil borings; installing and developing
monitoring wells in the borings; and sampling groundwater from each of the wells.
' Figure 1 shows the sampling locations. The following sections describe sample
collection activities and procedures.
2.1 Surficial Soil Sampling
' surficial and near-surface soil samples were collected from five locations. Because crop-
dusting operations occurred at the site for over 30 years, it was assumed that
the ground surface and the immediately underlying inch or two of soil was likely to be
contaminated as pesticides and herbicides are generally highly sorbed and are relatively
' immobile. The overall purpose for these samples was to determine whether residual
contaminants had penetrated below the top several inches of soil at different locations
around the site. The rationale for each of the sample locations is described below.

' 22314-0001:02/21/00
