"''
Re: Notice of Intent to Continue
Mining Operation
Delta Sand and Gravel Co.
Permit No. 77-22, Pit {~ 3
Dear Mr. Shelton:
Mining in Stage 1 of the mining plan was carried out during the
fall of 1984, removing approximately 60,000 yards of material on
approximately 5 acres of property.
Stage 1 of this pit is a river bottom area where there has never
been any vegetation and flooding in various degrees is experienced
every spring. During the spring of 1984, this area experienced
some of the most extensive flood damage in recent years. Homes,
farm grounds, private property and bridges were either washed away
or severely damaged during this flood. We experienced the loss of
much of our property in the Stage 2 and Stage 3 areas plus much of
the property adjacent to our ready mix operation. Our Stage 1 mining
property was completely refilled with gravel, trees, bridge culverts
and other miscellaneous junk washed down from upstream during this
flood. Working with the Corp of Engineers, Colorado State Highway
Department and the Colorado Game and Fish Department, the channel
of the river was reestablished in a normal pattern through our pit
area by the removal of dead trees, junk and gravel. A channel
approximately 400 yards long and 60 yards wide and 10 to 12 feet
deep was dug to more effectively channel the water under the State
Highway Department bridge. Approximately 60,000 yards of material
was removed and grading, sloping and bank stabilization as reclam-
ation operations were performed during this two month operation
during the fall of 1984 to reestablish this channel.
Any mining operations that would take place in the ensuing year
would take place in the Stage 1 with sloping and grading operations
for reclamation being performed in conjunction with the mining
operation during low or no flow periods of the river through
our property.
