• 2.2 East Pit <br />Z.2.1 EP032 <br />EP032 is comprised of 21.0 acres of <br />moderately sloping revegetation that has <br />predominately northerly and easterly aspects. <br />This unit was seeded in 1998 and therefore, has <br />undergone seven growing seasons prior to <br />sampling in 2005. A total of 37 plant taxa were <br />observed in the unit (see Table AB-1). Current <br />annual production across the unit averaged <br />3,593 pounds per acre in 2005 with perennial <br />grasses and annual grasses the dominant <br />categories (see Figure 1). Ground cover in <br />EP032 consisted of 81.2% live vegetation, 0.2% <br />rock, 163% litter, and bare soil exposure of <br />2.4%. Perennial cover across the unit averaged <br />52.9% with annual and biennial cover averaging <br />28.3%. The dominant taxa were cheatgrass <br />(Bromus tectorum), streambank wheatgrass <br />(Agropyron riparium), thickspike wheatgrass <br />(Agropyron dasystachyum), Siberian wheatgrass <br />(Agropyron sibericum), Japanese brome <br />(Bromus japonicus), and titer milkvetch <br />• (Astragalus titer) with 19.0%, 15.6%, 13.7%, <br />9.2%, 8.3%, and 5.4% average cover, <br />respectively. Woody plant density was <br />determined from 20 belt transects. Density <br />(Table 2) totaled 8 young and mature stems per <br />acre with big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) <br />the dominant woody plant. With regard to <br />Mao 1- EP031 <br />Veaualbn umMlq POIntlNaons-xaPS ~ `~~'~^`~ <br />• 1WS LiTMS PoIrR .ww MasoM _._~.. _...~..~ <br />~e~: ~.r~P n ,~ m .m <br />diversity, EP032 exhibited 3 perennial grasses and 1 perennial forb with between 3% and 60% relative <br />cover. <br />Unit EP032 currently passes the bond release diversity standard of 3 perennial grasses and 1 <br />perennial forb with between 3% and 50% relative cover. This unit also easily passes both the cover and <br />production bond release comparisons to the reference areas (see Charts 3 and S). This unit does not <br />presently meet the woody plant density standard of 90% of 1000 stems per acre and will probably not <br />meet this in the foreseeable future due to the heavy competitive grass cover. See Appendix AA -Section <br />7.3 for a discussion on options and recommendations with regard to woody plant density. Noxious weeds <br />appear to be controlled in this unit, however Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense}, musk thistle (Carduus <br />nutans) and bull thistle (Cirsium vu/gave) were observed in separate locations. There are several large <br />and several small patches of annual bromes scattered throughout the unit, comprising approximately <br />33% of the composition after seven years. Because of the abundance of cheatgrass and Japanese <br />brome, use of the herbicide Oust or Plateau is recommended to bring these taxa under control and <br />release water and nutrients for use by perennials. <br />At present, EP032 is a good example of an improved pasture grassland community that would <br />• contribute to the local system as foraging habitat for wildlife (especially elk), as well as provide a variety <br />of management opportunities for livestock grazing. <br />KennecoK Energy Co. / Colowyo Mine Page 12 Revegeration Monitoring - 20g5 <br />
