1996 Annual Hydrologic Report
• Page 3
seepage into the tube. Although water that seeped into the tube is sometimes dischazged from 001,
this Year it was pumped back into the plant rather than being dischazged. The 1996 full suite water
analysis results aze shown on data page SN-4. Table S96-2 has been prepazed to give a statistical
analysis of information taken at this site since 1979. Diagram S96-1 is a graph relating TDS to time
and incorporating a Lowess Smooth Plot. This plot was prepazed using a "nearness" factor of 0.5.
All dischazges from this site were within the permit limits.
Dischazge point 002 is water siphoned from our former NW Intake Portal of the Roadside South
Portals. Mine inflows that are not used underground or pumped to the prepazation plant are routed
to an abandoned portion of the mine for dischazge from this point. Flow information for this site is
discussed in the Mine Water section of this report. Data pages SE-5 and 6 include a listing of water
quality monitoring performed at this site during the Year. Data page SO-4 includes a full suite
analysis performed on sample collected during 1996. The average TDS dropped again this Yeaz by
about 3%, but showed signs of increasing near the end of the yeaz. This increase may have been due
to a lower flow rate at that time. Table S96-3 is a statistical summary of sampling since 1979.
Diagram S96-2 was prepazed to show a Lowess Smooth Plot (nearness = 0.5) through the TDS
information. The source of water for this dischazge point has vaned overtime, therefore information
prior to December 1992 may not be representative of future trends. All dischazges during this Year
were within the dischazge permit limits.
• Dischazge point 003 was utilized for dischazging water pumped out of the old Cameo Mine and has
not been used since 1979. There is no new information for this site this Yeaz.
Discharge point 004 continued to be used all yeaz to dischazge from the Roadside North Portal.
Flow information is given in the Mine Water section of this report. A listing of weekly monitoring
results is given on data pages SF-14 and 15 and result of the annual full suite analysis is presented
on data page SP-4 . Table S96-4 is a statistical summary of water quality data collected since 1979.
Diagram 596-3 show a Lowess Smooth Plot (nearness = 0.5) through historic TDS data on this site.
The wide variation in TDS is a function of the source of the water at the time of dischazge. The
primary sources are the portal ramp underdrain represented by location 1 for the Roadside North
Portal in the Mine•Water section, active azea mine inflows and sealed azea inflows at location 8. One
dischazge permit violation occurred on Mazch 28, 1996, resulting in DMG NOV C-96-010. This
violation of the was a result of too short of residence time for settling. Another violation occurred
on May 22, 1996. This violation was a result of a pump being lowered into a sump too faz and
picking up settled solids from the bottom. The pump was raised and the problem was taken caze of.
The Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) tests were continued this Yeaz. This testing was added to our
CDPS permit requirements because of the classification of the receiving waters. The acute test
involves subjecting fathead minnows to various dilutions of effluent in receiving water for 4 days
and subjecting Ceriodaphnia dubia to various dilutions for 2 days. The tests look primarily at
. mortality during the test period. Data pages SL-3 and SM-3 include summaries of the percent
survival at the individual effluent dilution ratios for the Yeaz.
