Comprehensive Malytical Rrsul[s Report
East and West Willow Crcek
SITE INSPECTION
COMPREHENSIVE ANALYTICAL RESULTS REPORT
EAST WILLOW CREEK (CERCLIS ID q 000001014398)
i AND WEST WILLOW CREEK (CERCLIS ID N CO000103542'n
MINERAL COUNTY, COLORADO
1.0 PRODUCTION
Under a Cooperative Agreement with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the
Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division of the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment (CDPHE) conducted a combined Site Inspection (SI) of East Willow Creek (including Willow
Creek) and West Willow Creek (including Windy Gulch) located near Creede, Mineral County, Colorado.
The study was designed to evaluate the impact of mining in the Creede Mining District (CMD). The work
was performed under the authority of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and
Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA or "Superfund"), as amended by the Superfund Amendments and
Reauthoriiation Act of 1986 (SARA), for the EPA Region VIII Superfund Remedial Screening Program.
This Comprehensive Analytical Results Report (ARR) presents the results of the sampling program which
was conducted from May 30 through June 2, 1995. For background information the reader is referred to
the Preliminary Assessments (CDPHE, 1995A & 1995B), the combined Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP)
(CDPHE, 19950), and the combined Sampling Activities Report (SAR) (CDPHE, 1995D). The SAR is
included as Appendix A.
The sampling activities at the CMD included the collection of 111 samples into 315 sample containers.
These included 21 solid source and soil samples, 3 aqueous source samples from mine drainages, 49
aqueous surface water samples (including 7 quality assurance and 4 opportunity samples), and 38 solid
surface water (i.e. sediment) samples. The sample locations are illustrated on Figures 1-3 and the
analytical results are summarized in Tables 2-7.
The SAP was designed to bridge with sampling requirements of other EPA and State programs to the extent
practical. Flow measurements were obtained for most surface water locations and mine drainages. Global
Positioning (GPS) readings were taken for all sample locations. In addition, four 1-liter aliquots were
obtained for each aqueous sample to allow for the analysis of total and dissolved metals as well as EPA Lab
1
