Comprehensive Analytical Results Report
Fast and West Willow Creek
5.3.3 East Willow Creek (SW/5E-17 through SWISS-26)
Metals concentrations in surface water and sediment samples are generally lower in East Willow
Creek than in West Willow Creek and Willow Creek. East Willow Creek does not exhibit elevated
metals concentrations above SW/5E-21 near the Ridge Mine. From SW/5E-21 through SE/SE-26,
aqueous and sediment samples exhibit elevated lead and zinc levels. Sediment samples are also
elevated with respect to arsenic, cadmium, and copper as depicted in Table 4. Dissolved
concentrations of lead and zinc exceed TVSs for SW-21 through SW-26. These standards are
hardness dependent but are less than .5 µg/1 for lead and less than 30 µg/1 for zinc.
Loading analyses reveal that the dissolved zinc load increases from 4.07 ppd to 13.89 ppd between
~T..~~ SW-21 and SW-22. These samples are located upstream and downstream, respectively, of the
~ Solomon Adit. The Solomon Adit is cazrying 10.04 ppd (before treatment) dissolved zinc.
'1
_ ~ '_ _7 Although the Solomon Adit discharge is being captured and treated in a series of three ponds
•-~ comprising the PMDTS, the outflow from the PMDTS is not accessible for sampling, so the
~'-_
`... -
~~ ;~ effectiveness of the PMDTS could not be directly determined. Samples collected from the three
~'~ ponds do not show a significant reduction in metals ctincentratiotu (page 6, Table 2), therefore,
~_'=~ a portion of the increase in zinc load in East Willow Creek may be attributable to the Solomon
SW-26 exhibits the highest concentration of dissolved lead (18.50 µg/1) of all surface water
samples. The City of Creede recently closed their drinking water intake located near SW-26.
5.3.4 Willow Creek (SW/5E-27 through SW/SE-34)
Willow Creek exhibits elevated concentrations for all surface water samples for the dissolved and
total fractions for cadmium, lead, manganese, and zinc. Background comparison for this analysis
was made with SW-Ol and SW-17. All sediment samples are also elevated for these analytes as
well as for arsenic, copper, and silver. Loading analyses reveal that West Willow Creek
contributes approximately 80 percent of the dissolved zinc load entering Willow Creek as
summarized below;
ocat'
West Willow SW-10
Dissolved Load Pounds per Dad
185.75
East Willow SW-26
44.37
Willow Creek SW-27 265.69
11
