Beginning at location SW/SE-04, several atlalytes
increase to elevated concentration levels for aqueous and sediment samples. Below SW/SE-04
several analytes exhibit a continual increase due to an abundance of diffuse mine sources.
Concentrations increase in West Willow Creek immediately below Nelson Creek, although loading
analyses (fable 8) reveal that Nelson Creek itself does not significandy contribute to this increase.
The most significant increase in metals loading along West Willow Creek occurs over a 1-mile
stretch near the Commodore Mine between SW/SE-OS and SW/5E-10 (SW/5E-09 was not
collected). Total cadmium concentrations increase from 5.5 micrograms per liter (µg(1) to 294
µg/I, total lead concentrations increase from 13.5 to 465 µg/l, and total zinc increases from 348
to 19,900 µgll. Loading analyses reveal that most of the increase is due to diffuse sources and
unseen ground water to surface water flows. The dissolved zinc load being carried by West
Willow Creek increases from 46.66 pounds per day (ppd) a[ SW-8 to 185.75 ppd at SW-10 (Table
8). The Nelson Tunnel discharge contributes less than 8 ppd to this load increase.
9
