5.0 SURFACE WATER PATHWAY

Comprehensirt Analytical Resu115 Report
Fast aM West Willow Creek
Previous studies have documented the release of metal contaminants to surface water in East Willow Creek,
West Willow Creek, Willow Creek, and the Rio Grande River. Primary targets within 15 downstream
miles of known sources include fisheries, wetlands, and threatened and endangered species habitats.
~. ^ ~
:Wes[ Willow Creek above Deerhorn Creek, East Willow Creek, and the Rio Grande River are classified
~ -
~ for aquatic life cold water 1, recreation 1, water supply, and agricultural uses. Numeric metals standards
J (table value standards (TVSs)) for these stream segments have been adopted by the Colorado Water Quality
- ~ Control Commission (WQCC). West Willow Creek below Deerhom Creek, Nelson Creek, Windy Gulch,
and Willow Creek are classified for recreation 2 and agricultural uses. The WQCC has not adopted
numeric metals standards for these stream segments.
East Willow Creek (below the Commodore Mine), West Willow Creek (below the Amethyst Mine), and
the entire length of Willow Creek are devoid of fish due to metals loading and habitat destruction resulting
from historic mining activities. The Rio Grande River, a gold medal fishery for trout, has suffered several
fish kills in the past attributable to metals-loading from Willow Creek. East and West Willow Creek,
Willow Creek, and the Rio Grande River are characterized by extensive riverine and palustrine wetlands
(U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Wetland Inventory Maps). The Ciry of Creede recently closed a drinking
water intake on East Willow Creek afrer converting to a ground water source located to the south of town
near the airport.
Federally listed endangered species habitat that exist in the area include the American Peregrine Falcon
(Falco peregrinus), Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), and the North American Wolverine (Gulo
luscus). Federally listed threatened species include the Mexican Spotted Owl (Strix occidnetalis lucida).
Numerous large mine dump and tailings pile sources have been identified throughout the CMD which are
uncontained with respect to the surface water pathway. In addition, the Nelson Tunnel discharges directly
to West Willow Creek and the Solomon Adit discharges to a series of passive treatment ponds along East
Willow Creek.
