March 2005 Hayden Gukb Loadaut - 2004 Annuat Hydrology Report 1 Poge 4 <br />of the current and foxmer surface water monitoriag stations are shown on Figure 1, Mauitoring Site <br />L ocationr. <br />MWH conducted a monitoring event in January 2004. Data fiom this event was included in the 2003 <br />Annual Hydrology Report. Dry Creek was Ilowing at HGSDl in January and the site was sampled; <br />however, the creek was frozen at HGSD3 and consequently not sampled at this site. The spring mnoff <br />monitoring event, which was also conducted by MWH, occurred on June 1, 2004. Samples were <br />collected at both Dry Creek locations. The Eall monitoring event, which was conducted by Hydro- <br />EnvJronmental occurred on November 2, 2004, and both Dry Creek locations were sampled. <br />Surface water quality data for 2004 are included in Appendix C, Surface Water,Qualaty Data. A review of <br />the laboratory analyses for samples collected during the June monitoring event shows that the surface <br />water constituents from HGSDl and HGSD3 are similar to previous years. New maximum <br />concentrations were recorded at the HGSDl location in January 2004. Calcium (227 mg/1), total <br />recoverable copper (0.03 mg/1), total recoverable molybdenum (0.0071 mg/1) and fluoride (0.5 mg/1) <br />concentrations were greater than previously reported concentrations. Data from the other two <br />monitoring events were within previously observed ranges. <br />The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has established use <br />' classifications and numeric standazds for Dry Creek in Regulation 33, Classification and Numeric <br />standazds Eor Upper Colorado River Basin (Yampa River Segment 13d). Classified stream uses are <br />agriculture, recreation ]a and aquatic life warm 2. The primary water use for Dry Creek is agriculture <br />' (both irrigation and livestock watering); however, the CDPHE also determined there is a reasonable <br />chance of primary contact recreation as a water use, and consequently, classified the stream as <br />recreation class la. The aquatic life wazm 2 classification is based on a finding that Dry Creek is not <br />capable of sustaining a wide variety of aquatic life, primarily because of physical habitat limitations - <br />stretches of [he creek are intermittent and water temperatures in the summer frequently approach 30 <br />~C. HGTI has compiled a list of applicable agriculture water quality criteria. Table 5, Companron of <br />1004 Surface [Y/ater Quakty to flgnculture Standards, summarizes the applicable standards along with a <br />' comparison of those standards to 2004 surface water quality data. The following constituent exceeded <br />its respective standazd during 2004; <br />• selenium (a[andazd of 0.018 mg/1): <br />HGSDl - 6/1/04: 0.032 mg/1 <br />The manganese standard of 0.200 mg/1 has often been exceeded at the upstream location, HGSDI <br />during previous sampling events. However, no manganese exceedances were reported during 2003. <br />While sulfate and total dissolved solids (TDS) do not have agriculture standards promulgated in <br />Colorado, the LXtyoming Department of Environmental Quality has established livestock drinking <br />water standazds for these constituents that can be used as benchmazk values to assess the <br />appropriateness of a water for agriculture use.
