West Elk Mine 2003 Annual Hydrology Report
• WEST ELK MINE
2003 ANNUAL HYDROLOGY REPORT
MOUNTAIN COAL COMPANY, LLC
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The 2003 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) details Mountain Coal Company's (MCC) hydrologic
monitoring activities at the West Elk Mine (Project) for the Water Year 2003 (WY2003). The
report summazizes the monitoring information and presents an analysis of the data with respect to
mining operations as required by MCC's Permit C-80-007 with the Colorado Division of Minerals
and Geology (CDMG).
1.1 Overview of Mining Operations
In WY2003, mining was completed in longwall panel 16 and mining was advanced up to crosscut
15 in longwall panel 17. Development mining continued in longwall panels 22 and 23 (see Map 1).
•
2.0 HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY OF 2003 WATER YEAR
During the Water Year 2003, October 2002 through September 2003 (WY2003), precipitation was
slightly below average and snowfall was neaz average, resulting in slightly below average stream
flows in Western Colorado.
2.1 Climatological Data
Precipitation and snow data for the project area for WY2003 were derived from the Paonia 1 SW
(56306), Overland Reservoir (59853), and McClure Pass (59743) meteorological and Snotel
stations. Figures la,b, and c show WY2003 monthly average precipitation data compared to 30-
year historical averages for Paonia, Overland Reservoir and McClure Pass. The annual
precipitation was 85%, 97% and 87% of the 30-year historical averages for Paonia, Overland
Reservoir and McClure Pass, respectively.
•
September zooa HydroGeo, Inc.
