West Elk Mine 2003 Annual Hydrology Report 5 <br />in both watersheds was below the historical average, as the dry spell from the previous years <br />lessened, but did not completely abate. <br />Average daily flows for the North Fork by month for WY2003 ranged from 5 percent of average in <br />July to 116 percent of average in May compared to historical data collected from 1934 through <br />2002. May was the only month with flows higher than average historical flows. The average daily <br />flow for WY2003 was 76 percent (345 cfs) of the historical daily average for the years 1934 <br />through 2003 (456 cfs). The peak flow in the North Fork was 4,770 cfs on May 19, 2003. A <br />summary of the stream flow data is graphically presented in Figure 2a. <br />Minnesota Creek flows for WY2003 were also below the historical average from 1937 through <br />1947 and 1985 through 2002. Average monthly flows for WY2003, compared to historical data <br />ranged from 39 percent of average in December to 97 percent of average in August. The average <br />daily flow for WY2003 was 69 percent (15.3 cfs) of the historical daily average for the years 1937 <br />through 2003 (22 cfs). The peak flow in Minnesota Creek was 159 cfs on June 1, 2003.
